Exhibition in a Box Proposal

Nancy Berger had a fulfilling life, happy marriage, mortgage paid off, and kids off to college. When one unexpected day the unthinkable happen. She was returning home after a late night out with friends. All of the sudden she began to fell dizzy and was having a trouble getting out off the car. Her husband did not think anything from it and they both went to bed. Next morning, Nate begins to get very concerns because Nancy's symptoms were getter worst. They rush to the emergency room after long hours of waiting for results. Doctor could not determine anything, they needed to get even more exams done. In one of Nate visits to the hospital he noticed that Nancy speech was getting very slow and her hand was curling up. By that time it was determined that she was having a stroke. In the following weeks she had several stroke involving major arteries on both sides of the brain. Nate could only hope that his wife could survived, luckily Nancy did.  She had to confront her new reality which was that know was going to be in a wheelchair and to depend on others to accomplish daily tasks. Nate promise to himself that he would make everything possible to make his wife happy.
Nancy loved to travel and her husband did not hesitate or pull back knowing of all the boundaries they were going to experience. Nate depict of what all of those boundaries they where going confront. He made Nancy wishes come true and they travel all over world. In their journey, they wanted to share it and encourage others individuals with disabilities. Therefore, they created a helpful guide for other disabled people to accomplished their dreams in any part of the world.

In my proposal, is to present their story with others because I admired Nancy Berger. Her story and her story is very powerful and helpful for a wide range of people. This would open the eyes of a lot of people that think people with disabilities are surrounded by boundaries and limited to do or achieve things. Nancy strongly prove them wrong as she share her journey, struggles, and achievements. It would also encourage people with disabilities to travel and to overcome boundaries. This book offers tools to those who have a disability and wish to travel.

In my exhibition,  I will present her as an individual showing medical records and a wheelchair because that was an significant part of her life and it a good visual representation of her obstacles and reflects her persona. I will also present her journey over the world. Illustrating picture of different places visited and its statements. In contrary to the e-book, I am going presented as if was an actual “ Disabled Travel Guide to the World” book.

Images and Ideology pgs 22-33

In this section of the reading, it generally focuses in the definition of ideologies and how it is presented in art works. According to the reading, when it comes to art work ideologies are projected as natural. This could create an issue and obtain strong reactions in individuals most of then would race questioning. Begin to be in doubt to its context and there own responses to that art piece. The book presents examples such as OJ Simpson's picture a dark tone as a bad connotation. In society black person is stereotypically projected as a criminal.
Art as the power to strongly project an ideology, change our perceptive in various aspects in society. It can also have the ability to separate ideology our enforce them.

In reading this section, I think is very true art work it is a very powerful tool to change our view our open our eyes to something totally new.

Image, Power and Politics pgs 9-22

Representation is when we incorporate words and images and convey a meaning. An object interpretation can be defined specifically on its cultural background or can be understand by its specific culture ideologies. A object that as a specific meaning in the States is very from someone that is from another culture means something completely different. The truth behind an image can be inflected by cultural ideologies. The Myth of Photographic Truth, a photographic is a scientific form of documenting historical and cultural events projected through an image. The section states that  a photography is not a reliably source because behind the lens there is a person making particular choices.

In reading this section, They put into context something that we do not think about an most artist do not take into consideration when making an art piece. Which is that an artist work of art will be interpret differently by each individual in different parts of the world. The myth of photographic, it is also something that we do not think about. It made be think in depth of the photos I have seen.  When we see an image how can we counted as truthful when now a days with computer software it can easily be manipulated.

"Image Icons" pgs 36-47

In this section of our reading. The book describes "iconic images as "an image that refers to something outside of its individual components, something (or someone) that has great symbolic meaning for many people."

The book gives several example of images such as the image of the mother and child where it represent maternal love as well as the importance and power of motherhood and maternal bond. Images can illustrated social mores in there background or by having symbolic objects.
The image of the Tiananmen Square this image state a culture and a specific time of period. It strongly reflect a society feelings, thoughts and outcomes.

Throughh centuries images have been tools to demonstrate a particular social mores or culture conflicts. Iconic images are those have evoke truth and capture a strong view of a culture or representation of time An image that have had in one way or another has revealed the truth or as impacted a society and has changed view and values

In reading section, I was surprise that they gave some much importance to Britney Spears personal life and her downfalls. In a way wanted for the section to have mention other iconic individual or events that in a way have change a country as a whole such as Che Guevara and World Trade Center

Producer's Intended Meanings pgs.52-55

In this section of our reading the book presented the concept and the intended meanings. The label of a producer can be presented in different ways and in different work forces. A producer can be an individual that works in a film or design industry, advertisement agencies, corporate business,or an artist. The label "producer" can be an individual or a group of individuals who come to gather and develop ideas and strategies for a final product or exhibition or a corporate which becomes part of the development parts of the advertisement process.

In the reading it highlights Roland Barthes's essay "The death of an Author" It to help us understand the power between the viewer and producer in its image and text. Barthes's directed view is that text provides a direct and clear meaning for the reader to interpret. His point his that text can be interpret in different forms depending in the viewers background and culture. It could be that most of time what the viewer interpret is not what the producer intended meaning. Now a days with new computer software we can be our own producer by obtaining an image and editing it.

Often producers of images such as artist create a piece of art in hopes of a specific reaction from the viewer or its created with an intended meaning. Most of the time the intended message or meaning from the artist is not interpret by the viewer. Because, meaning and interpretation depends on an individual background or culture.

Particularly in this reading, I found it very interesting the context in the label of producer and how it can differ depending on the type of work environment.

Image and Text

" The Art of War" Sun Tzu
" It is a matter of life and death, a road to safety or to ruin."

In the first image, I wanted to project through the image and text, domestic violence. Especially in the first part of the sentence with an image of a women which states pain and suffering and the texture of the paper simulates the after math of domestic violence.

In the second image focusing yet again focusing with the first part of the sentence but with the image a wanted to evoke a different message. Having an image of a female smoking a cigarette projects something that can seem so harmless but could actually be something life threatening such as cancer. As an individual you have the choose to quit smoking or not. An indiviadual that as the power pick to live a safe and healthy or unhealthy life a to road to ruins.

In the third image, I wanted to specifically focus in the words ( LIFE and DEATH) which in the sentence  those two words in particular make a strong statement . The image highlight those words in a very artist manner.

Regotiating Image

I choose to change to meaning of the iconic image of the Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Originally there is a male protester standing in front of the Tanks. I decided to replace the protester with the iconic Ronald MC Donald running away from the tanks that are trying to ran him over. MC Donald's fast food restaurant have been for the past few years very controversial. Especially, it has been documented in the film such as            " Super Size Me" where it demonstrates how the fast food industry provided unhealthy food which cause a lot of health problem in a short amount of time, hhealth problems that  sometimes can not be cured.  It is a world wide problem in particular fast food industry are increasing obesity. By placing Ronald MC Donald running from the tank is in a sense of society trying to eliminate this problem but as it shows in the image the tanks never get  Ronald MC Donald. Food industry are always inventing new products that attract a wide range of individuals.
There are always a large population that are still going to consume his products regardless of the problems. It is an ongoing battle which will be hard to win.
